The concept of coaching on your own motorcycle is used to help the individual develop a skill set to operate their own motorcycle with confidence. With Oneon1, we will travel to you. We will meet you at a destination of your choice, whether it be a parking lot or quiet urban setting, and we will begin the coaching there. Our coaching process begins with adapting our way of coaching to suit your needs. Firstly we assess your abilities whether it be verbally or on the bike, then we start our coaching from there. One thing that we don't do is have a timeline of when we expect you to grasp something, we just go along with your learning abilities and the skills you develop on the motorcycle and we progress the coaching with these continuous assessments. As you progress through the coaching, we start putting in other skills to develop so that hopefully they become second nature. What we want to do is have you to be able to ride your machine and use the skills we advise you of without having to think about them. That’s what develops the confidence. The coaching process begins with going over the motorcycle and pointing out the basic controls, levers and main adjustments. The bike can then be adjusted to suit the rider and to increase the comfort of the rider. We then start off with the basic skills, such as balance and control. Again this all depends on your abilities. The rate of progress, as mentioned before, all depends on the student. There is no pressure to learn something in a certain time period, that way the rider can stay relaxed and focus on the task at hand. The road portion of coaching again is basically assessing and developing the skills so the rider can ride with confidence. In order to help with communication, we use a two—way radio communication system that allows the coach and the student to pass messages and instructions back and forth, therefore allowing more riding time, rather than having to stop often to chat about the progress or issues. During the road portion, the coach will ALWAYS be behind the student, not only to observe and to advise, but also to block or “shield” them from traffic from behind, allowing the rider to concentrate on the road ahead. There is no “set” amount of coaching an individual needs. The coaching can last as long as the rider needs, or it could even just be an hour session for the individual to re-gain confidence on the bike (for example the first ride in spring time). A good rule of thumb is to never over do it and it has also been noticed that a 2 hour session is quite draining on the rider and they feel rather fatigued after 2 hours. The ability of the coach is to also notice the decline in progress that comes from fatigue and to be able to call it a day.
Remember the coaching and coach are there for you, so you can learn to ride your motorcycle with confidence. When in doubt, ASK!
